Having your chimney swept will help eliminate the built-up of soot from the fuel that you burn, ie. coal, wood, oil or gas-fired appliances, helping to prevent chimney fires and reduce the risk of dangerous fumes/carbon monoxide emissions.

Chimney sweeping should take place at least:

• • • • Once a year for appliances burning smokeless coal, gas and oil
      • Twice a year for appliances burning domestic bituminous household coal
      • Quarterly for appliances burning wood

The only way to establish whether a chimney is safe to use is to have a full inspection and chimney sweeping carried out by a registered, qualified chimney sweep. If you have not had your chimney swept and certified within the last 12 months, you could be at risk of chimney fire and/or Carbon Monoxide poisoning. This may also invalidate your insurance in the event of a chimney fire.
